An interesting statistic I just read was that we spend approximately 33% of our life either sleeping or attempting to sleep. That certainly makes me want to pick up any dirty laundry from the floor and decorate my bedroom a little better. Maybe I’ll try to read a book or watch a movie or something to help me try to remember my dreams better. I hope the majority of my dreams are nice ones. Anyway, with a statistic like that one, I decided to key in here on EMF protection for the bedroom. What are some things we can do to better protect ourselves while in the room where we spend so much time?
Previously, I wrote a similar article entitled EMF Radiation and Sleep. Definitely check that one out as well if you wish. In this article, however, I’ll try to expand on that article and throw some more shiny, non-EMF nuggets of information and suggestions out there for you guys.
What is EMF? And How Does it Affect Us?
So, what is EMF radiation? I know I have mentioned this a number of times previously on this site, but for those who are new here, or don’t yet know, no worries. EMF is actually a form of radiation that is emitted by electric devices that transmit a signal. A number of this is actually ionizing, such as X-rays. However, a good deal of EMF radiation is non-ionizing, like the type that is transmitted by your mobile phone, your Fitbit fitness tracker, or your laptop. While government agencies as well as federal guidelines suggest that small amounts of exposure to non-ionizing radiation are actually not recognized to cause cancer or serious health concerns, independent research indicates that this may not be entirely accurate.
From headaches to fatigue to sleeping issues, from fertility issues to depression, EMF can affect us in many ways. Below are a few of the ways:
- Memory issues
- Cancer concerns
- Problems with our reproduction system. Fertility issues
- Genetic disorders
- Headaches and depression
- Tinnitus (perception of noise or ringing in the ears)
- Fatigue, a general feeling of tiredness, daytime sleepiness
- Disturbances of sleep, insomnia
- Depression
- Loss of appetite
- Anxiety
- Difficult time concentrating
- Feeling faint, dizziness, nausea
- Rash, skin irritation, itchy sensation
So How Can we Better Protect Ourselves From EMF in the Bedroom?
There are various ways to better protect ourselves from EMF radiation in our own bedrooms. Some do not require any additional costs at all. These only require us to form a habit by doing them consistently. So, here are some ways to accomplish this.
Cell Phone – EMF Protection for the Bedroom
As I mentioned in an earlier post, the cell phone (and my use of it) is one of my biggest deterrents when trying to live an EMF-free (or reduced) lifestyle. I actually have 2 of them. One cell phone is for personal use and another is for my job. I am definitively not alone either when I say the cell phone is a large cause for concern regarding EMF radiation. I recently read an article that claimed more than 50% of cell phone carrying individuals in the United States slept with their cell phone next to their bed.
One obvious way to eliminate EMF radiation from the cell phone while in the bedroom is to not have it with you there. Use an old fashion alarm clock to wake up when need be and not the cell phone’s version of an alarm. Try turning the cell phone completely off at night. I realize this is easier said than done. However, if you do need the cell phone on and with you in the bedroom, try placing it in airplane mode or attempt placing the cell phone a good distance away from you when trying to sleep. Is there a real need to surf the web while in bed? If not, simply don’t do it. Also, try not to charge your cell phone’s battery on the nightstand next to your bed while sleeping. If your cell phone needs to be recharged, charge it elsewhere.
There are also many EMF protective cell phone cases available on the market today. DefenderShield is a brand I trust. They use multiple layers of shielding protection to eliminate 99% of EMF radiation. To view options DefenderShield offers, please follow link here.
Another related product for EMF protection is the EMF protection cell phone sticker. Although the cell phone case seems more effective (to me anyway), many swear by these cell phone stickers as well. Aulterra Neutralizer is a company that have been in business since 1997 and actually have a patent on their technology. They use paramagnetic minerals in order to retune EMF radiation frequencies and make radiation no longer harmful to the human body. EMF-Harmony also offers an EMF harmonizer product for cell phones. For the EMF-Harmony solution, you can review it here. If you’d like to read more about the Aulterra Neutralizer product, here is the link (Amazon.com).
Lastly, while EMF cell phone cases are more effective and a more proven source of cell phone protection for our intention here, there are some protective stickers on the market now that claim to help with EMF cell phone reduction. Some are made, in part, from materials such as shungite which is also regarded as an EMF protective mineral.
WiFi Router – EMF Protection for the Bedroom
My second suspect when trying to eliminate or drastically reduce the amount of EMF radiation in my bedroom is the WiFi router. If you already turned your cell phone off or are not using the internet at all, why have the WiFi router on at all? Try turning it off at night. If you do need it on for whatever reason try using a WiFi router guard.
There are a few different options when deciding on a WiFi router guard. One option is the WiFi router guard cage. Another option comes in the form of a shielding pouch or bag.
Regarding the cage option, two options used frequently are:
Smart Meter Router Guard (link to Amazon.com) – This is the classic Faraday cage. Smart Meter claims this guard will block most of the EMF your router emits. It actually comes in two sizes as well. The small version is (12” x 9” x 3” inches) and the large version is (12 x 11 1/4″ x 5 1/4″ inches). The price of the small is reasonable. And it is large enough for most modems.
Faraday Defense Router Shield (link to Amazon.com) – This is a heavy-duty version of the Faraday cage. Interior dimensions are 3.5″ x 10.25″ x 12″, which, again, will fit most routers nicely. Faraday Defense claims that this unit provides 60 dB attenuation (or signal reduction), which translates to a 99.9% reduction. This model does run a bit pricier.
And regarding the EMF shielding bag option:
This WiFi Router Cover (link to Amazon.com) is a really good option. This WiFi cover effectively reduces harmful emissions from your router. Made from high-quality copper, nickel, and polyester fiber fabric, it’s certified to provide 99.999% protection against harmful radiation.
Lastly, if you do not want to turn your WiFi router off in the evening or do not wish to invest in a guard or shielding pouch, try placing the WiFi router at a good distance away from your bedroom if possible. There are also some protective fabrics on the market today that can be used as a shielding pouch. You can even try an even simpler approach, using an upside-down mesh wastebasket to cover the router.
Bed Canopy – EMF Protection for the Bedroom
Another form of EMF protection for the bedroom can come in the form of a bed canopy. No, I do not currently use a bed canopy myself, but I do see the overall advantage of utilizing one. When I think of a bed canopy, the first thing that comes to mind is vacationing at some luxurious resort and using a canopy to keep those annoying mosquitos or any other pesky insects away. However, many use a bed canopy for EMF protection as well. And it does provide a very good means in doing just that.
While canopy beds became popular in medieval Europe to provide noblemen and women more warmth and privacy, nowadays, more and more people are using them with EMF radiation protection in mind. Amazon and other sellers do currently sell EMF bed canopies. Below are a couple of variations on the market today (links to Amazon.com).

If having a bed canopy does appeal to you, I’m sure you can find one that fits your particular style without much issue. If not, or if you are patient and adept at creating home products in this genre yourself, perhaps purchase a type of EMF protection fabric separately and craft your own. As an example, the Swiss Shield Naturell fabric is also available to assemble your own bed canopy or whatever else that is needed.
The EMF Protection Blanket
When I think of the word “blanket” I tend to think of warmth, but you can now combine warmth with EMF protection. Some may use heated blankets to provide further warmth when sleeping. However, like any other electrical device, these heated blankets do emit EMF.
Just like oven mitts protect our hands from the heat of the stove, an EMF radiation protection blanket reduces our exposure to EMF radiation while providing us with warmth. The blanket works because of the materials used in its design, and these materials help reduce the amount of EMF radiation we are subjected to. DefenderShield is a top notch company whose focus is on protecting individuals from EMF radiation, and the protective blanket they bring to market actually includes multiple layers of shielding to block up to 99% of EMF radiation. For our purpose here, EMF protection for the bedroom, the larger size can fit most beds and would be a great option. Here is a link to the product on DefenderShield’s website.
I wrote another article on EMF protection blankets earlier, and you can find that article here. I find that an EMF radiation protection blanket just makes sense to protect ourselves while in the bedroom.
FitBits, Bluetooth Fitness Watches and Sleep Monitors
Devices like the FitBit and another Bluetooth type fitness watches, do sound like a noble and convenient piece of technology to support your fitness goals. However, they also use Bluetooth to keep track of your progress. And as we know, Bluetooth is a concern in regards to EMF/RF radiation.
Bluetooth is essentially wireless technology that allows for quick transmissions of the data needed for a device (such as a FitBit) to work to its full capabilities. The Fitbit uses Bluetooth to sync your device to your cell phone or PC.
Below are a couple YouTube videos that show the potential amount of EMF radiation emitted from a Bluetooth enabled fitness watch.
Video 1:
Video 2:
If you do believe in the beneficial values of a fitness watch and still would like to begin or continue using one, by all means go for it. Perhaps, consider removing the device in the evening and, treat it in the same manner as you would a cell phone, keeping it away or turning off Bluetooth while sleeping.
A Few More Suggestions For Bedroom Protection from EMF Radiation
There are a few more ways to reduce our exposure to EMF while relaxing in the bedroom. Here are a few more ideas to ponder when trying to do just that.
- Position your bed away from power outlets.
- If your bed shares the same wall with an electric meter or circuit breaker, try to change your bed’s location away from such.
- Change the lighting in your bedroom to incandescent style bulbs. One great option that comes recommended here are the bulbs sold by Sunlite (link to Amazon.com).
- Try to minimize the amount of other electronics in the bedroom. Perhaps use a battery powered alarm clock, think about reducing the amount of lamps you have in your room. Look around. I am sure you will find other devices plugged into you wall’s outlets that can probably be unplugged as well.
- Shungite is a mineral comprised of greater than 98 percent carbon and is commonly believed to digest and neutralize the dangerous frequencies from EMF radiation. Find available shungite products here in the recommended products section of EMFLuLu. Try placing shungite nearby electronic devices in your bedroom.
In Conclusion
Aside from sleeping or closing our eyes in an attempt to sleep, we all tend to spend much time in our bedrooms in general. Whether that time is spent writing an article like this, whether it is spent working on a laptop at night, whether it is spent watching television or getting enthralled in a good Netflix show, whether your time is spent doing a quick exercise routine every morning or night from the bedroom, we should be more aware of EMF radiation in the bedroom and take the necessary steps needed to reduce the amount of EMF. While living in today’s world, I would not expect anybody to put all of the above into action. Regardless, I hope you found this article helpful and maybe found a one or two little nuggets of knowledge to implement.
