You have probably heard much about EMF and RF radiation recently.  So, what are they?  Are they the same thing, or are they different?

The simple answer is that EMFs (or electromagnetic fields) refer to the low frequency magnetic fields generated by the electricity in wires. RF (or radio frequency) commonly refers to the usually high frequency fields generated by the use of wireless equipment. So the wires that run throughout your house or workplace would be considered a source of EMF radiation.  While the cell phone in your pocket would be a source of RF radiation.

Sources of Both EMF and RF Radiation

Ok, so we already placed the wiring of a building into the EMF category and the beloved cell phone into the RF category.  Some more common examples of EMF would be power lines, electrical panels, appliances and transformers.  Does it have a wire? Does electricity come from somewhere and flow through that wire?  On the other hand, some more common examples of RF would be cell towers, your television transmission, your radio transmission, antennas, and wireless networks.  In these examples the data does not go from point A to point B through the use of a wire.  Instead the data connects from point A to point B wirelessly.

How to Protect Yourself from Some of the More Common Forms and Sources

You can find more detail on each topic discussed below on this site. But here is a summarized version. I will include the links to the specific articles on each subject as well.

Router Guards:

Nowadays, inside most homes and properties, exposure to WiFi is pretty much a given. It is a non-stop radio-frequency radiation (RF) that we are subjected to in our homes and places of business.  Is it convenient?  Yes.  I think so anyway.  But there is growing concern that WiFi radiation can cause health issues and even severe conditions in some people.

So, how can we easily protect ourselves from the radiation caused by WiFi routers?  One way to lessen the degree that we are subjected to is to simply turn the router off at night.  Another is to purchase and utilize a router guard.  A router guard is simply a container made of metal mesh.  Place your router in the container, shut the cover, and that is it.  WiFi router guards have been tested and are able to reduce the amount of RF emission up to 99%.

Cell Phone Cases:

Obviously, as we mentioned here earlier and as you probably know already, the cell phone is another significant source of RF radiation. Again, to combat the amount of radiation when the cell phone is not in use, turn it off overnight.  Another option is to look for a radiation reducing cell phone case.  Sounds simple enough, right?

Meter Guard:

Some time ago, whenever a meter reader needed to read the household’s energy consumption, he or she would need to physically proceed to the meter and capture the measurement.  Nowadays, that process is being swapped out due to the smart meter.  The smart meter communicates your household’s energy consumption wirelessly to the meter reader as he or she drives by.  The smart reader increases the radiation level of your home.  So, how does one decrease the amount of radiation emitted from the meter?  One answer is a smart meter cover. These covers simply fit over the installed meter and assist in blocking a significant degree of the radiation.

In Conclusion

EMF and RF radiation are both amongst us daily and can be harmful to our well-being.   EMF radiation is generated by the electricity in our wires.  RF radiation is generated by the use our wireless devices.  Both are obviously pretty much present everywhere with no signs of letting up. However, there are a few ways to assist in lowering the amount of exposure we consume daily. Once you understand more about EMF and RF radiation and what devices expose us to this radiation the most, you should be able to pinpoint certain devices or situations that we feel may pose the biggest threats to the well-being of our loved ones.  We can then do some solid research, and we do have options to limit the amount of exposure we are all subjected to daily.
