So, obviously cell towers do emit some level of EMF radiation.  But how much?  Is it a dangerous level?  What is considered a safe distance to keep yourself and home from a cell tower?  In this article, we will dig into these questions?

Do Cell Towers Emit EMF Radiation and How Much?

With the extensive use of cell phones, cell towers are now present in many communities.  How do they work?  Well, basically, when you take your cell phone out of your pocket and call Kevin to wish him a happy birthday, a signal is sent from the cell phone’s antenna to the nearest tower’s antenna.  This tower’s antenna can both receive and hand off signals from cell phones.  So when a signal is obtained by a cell tower, the tower will then transfer the signal to a switching station where it can be connected to the recipient of the call.  In this case Kevin’s cellphone or landline.  Happy Birthday, friend.

So what happens if you are driving home from work when you call Kevin (on your hands free device, of course)?  Well, when you are moving, there is a handoff.  A new and closer cell site will then pick up your data and transmit it to your cell phone.  Fast too.

So what’s the verdict?  Do they emit EMF radiation or not?  Well, here is a video from YouTube to check out.  A quick synopsis, the gentleman taking the video journeys via car to a cell tower that is located on top of a restaurant building.  When he starts his journey, the emf reading is in the safe range (7.8 millivolts per meter) but the closer he gets to the cell tower, the emf reading increases to well over 1,500 millivolts per meter.

Is the EMF radiation emitted from a cell tower at a dangerous level?

Well, this all depends on who you ask.  Ask a spokesperson who represents the cell phone industry, and he/she will tell you that cell phone towers pose no health risks whatsoever.  The opposing side of this argument, however, is growing in size each day.

The FCC or Federal Communications Commission (fcc.gov) is in charge of regulating systems such as cell phone towers.  Thus, the exposure levels from cell towers need to abide with the FCC’s radio frequency (RF) radiation exposure guidelines.  These guidelines were created to protect the general public from RF-related health risks.

The question I often ponder is why exactly does the FCC need to regulate exposure levels from cell towers if there is no potential health risk involved?

What is considered a safe distance to keep yourself and home from a cell tower?

Well, again, it all depends who you are asking.  The consensus seems to believe that people living anywhere from 150 yards to 440 yards (quarter of a mile) away from a cell tower could be at risk of EMF related health issues.

How can you find out how many cell towers are in your area?

Well one website to find out how many cell towers are located near you is cellreception.com.  Simply enter your zip code and select go.  On the page that comes up, select the ALL TOWERS hyperlink and you can see the location of all the cell towers in your area – addresses and all.  Another website to do a similar search is antennasearch.com.
